    • Raymond Haigler, 1970: First Haiglers came to Conestoga Twp, Lancaster Cty, PA in the early 1700s. Search of records in Lancaster County did not find who his parents were. Came from Langenbruck, Basel Canton, Switzerland. (Archive Building in Leistal, Switzerland has genealogical records dating back to 1660.) Reference to four older brothers of Wm Haigler was found in the "Pennsylvania Germania", v13: John, Jacob, Benjamin and Sebastian. The older four brothers fought the French and Indians along the Ohio River from Wheeling to Fort Pitt.

In a note written in 1860, Sebastian's son, Abraham, says he didn't know his grandfather's name, only that he came from Basel, Switzerland and was killed by Indians in Hardy County, VA. This would be Jacob Haigler who emigrated in 1745.

Some or all of the brothers also fought in the Revolutionary War, and Wm H served as a bodyguard for Gen. Washington although the National Archives does not have a record of his service. (Many records were lost in fires in 1800 and 1814.) A reference to his service does appear in the "Compendium of American Genealogy, v 5, p 555, and in records of Pendleton and Hardy Counties in VA.

Uncle Ray says that the family migrated from PA to Augusta County, Virginia (which became Pendleton County in 1787). They settled on a farm located on the No Fork of Mill Creek near farms on which his brothers John, Jacob and Sebastian had previously located. (Mill Creek is in the Allegheny Mountains in present Randolph County, West Virginia. Most of Wm H's children married and made their homes in Pendleton, Hardy, Randolph and Hampshire Counties.

(Per Ray Gall from layton147 1/5/14: Typed notes found in old family histories said that William's brothers John, Jacob and Sebastian settled near each other when the family migrated from PA to Virginia in 1783-84.)

The dates for his parents do not add up. They would have been too old when he was born. Perhaps his mother's birthdate is wrong.

A document called "The Genealogy of the Family of Jacob Hegler of the canton of Basle, Switzerland and of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania..." by Melville F. Hegler, 1948, says William was probably the son of Benjamin, but that would seem to contradict the story that William and Sebastian were neighbors.

The Genealogy also cites the state census of Hampshire County, VA, 1782-83, p. 91, John Wilson, Taker as stating that the family was referred to as the "Haglers on the Pike" in contrast to those in Pendleton County. It is clear that there was considerable confusion over names and counties, which changed over time, many of the ones cited above having been carved out of the original Augusta County, Virginia.

Waddell’s Augusta County Annals p 204 refers to Bastion Hagler and William Haigler being neighbors. The “Compiler” says William was probably Benjamin’s son.
